Every smile starts with an initial consultation!
Dr. Trask and our team are excited about meeting you during your first visit and appreciate the opportunity to discuss your orthodontic needs. Your initial appointment is a 60-minute visit which will give us insight into your orthodontic needs. It will consist of photos, an x-ray, and a thorough examination by Dr. Trask. A discussion of orthodontic concerns and potential treatment options will follow.
Our goal of the first meeting will be to:
- Getting to know you and your goals for treatment.
- Evaluate the needs and concerns of both you and your dentist.
- Complete a thorough assessment of the jaw relationship; position, function and fit of the teeth, as well as health of the jaw joints and muscles.
- Outline the varying treatment alternatives, treatment timing, fee estimates, scheduling and general office procedures.
- Discuss the next steps in treatment of any orthodontic problem.
During the initial examination for each patient, we will address the following questions that cover the basics of orthodontic treatment. We encourage you to ask questions as well.
- Is there a condition that orthodontics can address?
- Is treatment needed now, or should treatment be delayed until appropriate growth, tooth eruption, or other factors have occurred?
- What treatment procedures will be used to correct the problem?
- Do any permanent teeth need to be removed?
- How long will treatment take?
- How much will it cost?
- What are my payment options?
Many times we advise that, although orthodontic treatment will be necessary in the future, younger patients are not quite ready to begin. These patients are placed in our "Growth and Guidance" program with regular checkups to follow growth and tooth eruption to determine the most appropriate time for treatment to be started.
Should orthodontic treatment be indicated additional information will be needed for Dr. Trask to develop the appropriate, individualized treatment plan. This additional information, or diagnostic records, consist of another x-ray and impressions for study models. We know your time is valuable, so we often reserve time following the exam for these records. This will take approximately 20 additional minutes.
While we can often formulate your treatment plan and answer these general questions about treatment during the initial examination, In certain cases, an additional consultation appointment will be scheduled to discuss treatment needs after careful analysis of the diagnostic records. We feel it is important to analyze each patient's specific needs, because in-depth planning leads to superior results and higher patient satisfaction. We insist that our patients leave the office with a clear understanding of their specific needs, what the treatment will consist of, and how long it will take. It's our goal to answer all your questions as well as communicate with your dentist to coordinate overall dental care.
Our team will be glad to answer any questions you may have, and we will provide all of the information that you need to determine which treatment is right for you. Please contact our practice to schedule your initial consultation.
What happens after the initial consultation?
You're one step closer to achieving the smile you've always wanted! The appointment when you get your appliances (braces, expander, etc.) usually takes from one to two hours). During this appointment, our team will be available to make sure that you are as comfortable as possible. After that, you'll see us at regular intervals every 4 to 8 weeks for adjustments. Adjustments generally take 20 to 40 minutes, depending upon treatment needs.
Our scheduling philosophy is based upon respect for your time. We appreciate that you have made room in your busy schedule for orthodontic treatment and we want you to understand that we devote ourselves to being on time. Precise scheduling allows us to direct proper attention to your treatment while staying on time as much as possible. for this reason we can accomodate late patients or surprise repairs only as time permits. Please remember that this policy is in place out of respect for the time and needs of all our patients. If you are in need of repairs or realize that you will be late to a scheduled visit, please call so that we can determine whether your appointment should be rescheduled. Please also be aware that in fairness to all patients, we cannot reserve appointment times for convenient rescheduling of missed visits.
If you cannot keep an appointment, please notify us 48 hours prior to your appointment. Cancel only if it is an emergency. It may be difficult to reschedule at your preferred time since most appointments are made 4 to 8 weeks in advance.
Visiting the dentist during orthodontic treatment
It is very important that you continue to visit your family dentist once every six months, even during your orthodontic treatment, for teeth cleanings and routine dental checkups. If extra dental care is needed, we will be happy to coordinate with your family dentist to make sure that you are receiving the best care possible.
